Should leggings be worn as pants? Ask that question to a room full of people, and explosive opinions are sure to erupt. Some say that they are too tight, too revealing, or too racy to be considered actual pants. Others say that they should be a comfortable staple in anyone's closet. This controversy as to whether or not this trend should be socially accepted has been sweeping the nation.
I used to be just like you. I’d see a girl wearing leggings as pants, and I would roll my eyes and think about how inappropriate her tight outfit was. I made fun of them to no end and looked down on the wearer, believe me. Then one day I saw a video that changed my whole perspective. Clothesencounters, a stylish California duo who posts fashion videos on YouTube, opened my eyes to a new fashion freedom. See the video here. Clothesencounters are personal style icons of mine, and seeing this video absolutely shocked me! How could two supposed style gurus condone leggings as pants? I would bet my bottom dollar that these girls know what they're talking about in the world of fashion,so I watched the video a few more times until finally, I saw my mistake. Leggings are not just a piece of fabric! They can really enhance an outfit and allow for a unique and stylish look. People need to open their eyes and be accepting towards this practical and comfortable trend.
One of the main arguments that people make is that many girls are too big to wear leggings as pants and that they are disgusted when they have to look at these girls. Fashion doesn’t discriminate. Bigger girls and smaller girls (and guys for that matter) should be able to wear whatever they want no matter what their body size. Saying anything other than that is just plain rude. If you see a larger girl, or any girl, rocking some leggings as pants and you don’t like what you see, don’t look. It’s as simple a solution as that.
Leggings as pants should be socially accepted because…
1. Leggings are as comfortable as your favorite pair of sweatpants! When students have to wake up early and get out the door, leggings can look a lot more stylish than slouchy sweats and are a very practical option on those dark, early mornings. Comfort is key, and a sleek pair of leggings certainly fit the bill.
2. Leggings can be an affordable trend for all girls! In a world of one hundred dollar jeans, pricy designer purses, and super expensive shoes, leggings can the saving grace for that fashionista on a budget. Eight dollars is an easy price to pay for all of the benefits they offer. Leggings are a great option because they allow the wearer to save money and still look cute.
3. Leggings embrace the trends of the times. NOT accepting someone's outfit choice is closed-minded and everyone can wear whatever he or she wants to. Style embraces individuality, so why try to stop someone who feels good in his or her outfit? These cute pants are taking the style world by storm and many celebrities and real girls are embracing this trend. (Have you seen Pippa Middleton in her leggings?) At one time, everything that we are wearing today was just a trend. Get on the style train and accept that leggings are a fashion-do at the moment.
There is, however, one golden rule to abide by when working these awesome babies!
*Make sure that your leggings are not see-through in any way. While we don’t mind seeing the outline of your legs, we don’t want to see actual skin or anything else. *
Fashion evolves and changes, and we all need to accept that leggings as pants are here to stay. We need to open our minds and show ourselves as fashion citizens of the world. If you still think that leggings as pants are inappropriate or too-revealing-that’s fine-just don’t wear them or criticize those that do. Some trends are not for everyone, but clothing is a personal choice that we all have. Leggings can be stylish, comfortable and affordable and hopefully more girls will embrace the beauty of the leggings! #leggingsaspantsforever
wow. You acually changed my mind about leggings with your concession. I always used to get really annoyed with people who wore leggings, but I guess there are more ways to make them work. I do agree with you when you say that it's okay if you show the outline of your legs, but showing anything else is just rude. And gross. Nice job
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with sophie. I normally believe that if your going to wear leggings then your butt needs to be covered. From your arguement though, if your can look decent in these "pants" I guess it's ok to wear them. Althought you may need to talk to some avid legging wearers because often more is seen through the leggings than I ever wish to see. Great job! your argument was very strong and changed my beliefs, mostly, on legging wearers.
