Some people believe the USDA, the association involved in the regulations of school nutrition, has implemented a proper nutritional standard for lunch; this act prohibits trans fat in lunches and requires an offer of a minimum of a half cup of dark green vegetables a week.
This same organization allows french fries and the tomato paste on pizza to be counted as vegetables. The students of Fort Zumwalt are like wilted plants in a dark, deserted corner--we aren't receiving the nutrients we need to stay healthy.
Studies show that when students are presented with a healthy eating alternative, they will normally choose the more nutritious option. Implementing whole grain breads, additive free foods, and an everyday salad bar filled to the brim with fruits and vegetables will give students the push they need to make healthier consuming decisions.
There needs to be major reconstruction in the regulations the cafeteria must follow. Reforming the rules and regulations can produce:
- Lower obesity rate. Over the years, the child obesity rate has been on the rise. School lunches could be a contributing factor considering most schools serve chemically altered, trans fat infested rubbish. With the new addition of whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables, students will be receiving the proper nourishment they deserve.
- Better behaved students. A Wisconsin high school reported that after giving children healthier options, there was a drastic change to the attitudes and behavior of the student body. The statistics also show more attentive and concentrated students. The atmosphere at lunch sets the stage for what goes in the classroom.
- Increased school attendance. Because students are eating healthier and more nutritiously, they won't feel that discontented, disgruntled feeling of going to school. Their minds are being revitalized and properly nourished, which in turn produces the desired effect of thinking clearly. Suddenly the idea of dropping out of school at seventeen doesn't seem like the brightest idea.
This cannot be accomplished without action. Many are needed to take a stand to receive the change desired.
By contacting the school board and requesting a change to the school lunches Fort Zumwalt serves its students, a change and a better life for Fort Zumwalt's students can be achieved.
Uhm, EW! I did not know that little tidbit of information at the beginning. Do not want! That is soooooooo gross. Seriously. Ew. I like chicken, but that makes me want to vomit. How is that even legal? Aren't there rules and regulations for a reason? We are the nation's future, and they're feeding us dog food? No.
ReplyDeleteLex, first of all, I love the title. Second of all, I love the topic. Third of all, your concise form of writing and usage of bullet points makes me happy. I like good format like that. I never realized that healthy food could increase attendance rates. That was what "wowed" me. "Reject hens?" Eww. I always wondered why the chicken tasted like fish and feet... Now I know why. Good job targeting Fort Zumwalt. That makes it personal and relateable to those who are reading it. Also, nice job with the links! Overall, I enjoyed reading this. :)
